Utau Pudding
A moment to unwind in the city.
Just outside the east gate of To-ji Temple in Kyoto, Utau Pudding serves parfaits crowned with spherical custards popped from balloons, pudding-soaked French toast, and carefully sourced egg-over-rice sets for a relaxed weekend visit.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just steps from the east gate of To-ji Temple, Utau Pudding catches the eye with custards formed into perfect spheres, revealed only after piercing their balloon casing. A spoon sinks in to find a smooth, satisfyingly dense texture that dissolves on the tongue with rich sweetness. This specialty crowns the cafe's signature pudding parfait, which can be tailored with standard smooth custard, raspberry, matcha, or seasonal pudding variations. Layered underneath are scoops of vanilla ice cream, house-baked pastries, meringue, and fruit, offering contrasting textures and flavors with every spoonful.
Dessert options extend well beyond parfaits. Another satisfying choice is the pudding French toast, thoroughly steeped in the cafe's signature custard batter and baked until crisp on the outside while staying tender and airy within. Cakes such as cheese terrines made with acacia honey or Uji matcha are also available, and guests can customize their orders by pairing them with a choice of pudding or ice cream.
The beverage selection includes staples like Americanos and cafe lattes alongside spiced chai, fragrant osmanthus lattes, and palate-cleansing salted plum kelp tea. For savory options, the kitchen prepares pasta sets with spaghetti Napolitana or mushrooms, as well as an egg-over-rice dish accompanied by small side dishes. The rice bowl features "Kuro Tanba" eggs from Kyotamba, served with 2 varieties of soy sauce—a domestic bonito-dashi blend and a clear Kyushu soy sauce—inviting diners to compare their flavors side by side.
Decorated with artwork and assorted knick-knacks, the intimate cafe operates primarily during daytime hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The signature spherical custards are also sold to take away, making them just as convenient to pick up as a souvenir as they are to enjoy while resting between walks around Kyoto.
